The function of this malting
unit is to produce malt from barley by soaking the grain
in water, germinating, and then drying the germinated
barley in a controlled environment. This completely
automated process takes six to seven days. The unit
performs all cycles according to specific programs. This machine was built for the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food in Winnipeg, Manitoba. MAG Design Group Inc. was responsible for all of the structural design and detailing, as well as all component selection and hook up to the controller interlink. |

Process Summary: 1. Wash Cycle: One hundred samples are submerged in chilled water, tumbled, and then aerated. Temperature and humidity are controlled throughout. This cycle is repeated three times. Duration: 1/2 day 2. Germination Cycle: Samples are held in a controlled environment for a period of 4 days. 3. Kiln Cycle: Samples are dried in the controlled environment. Temperature, humidity, and a high volume air exchange are controlled for a period of 2 days. The automated process can be modified at any time during a batch malting process via personal computer. |
